Dear LGO community,
I am delighted to inform you that J. Christopher (Chris) Love has agreed to take on the role as LGO Co-Director for the MIT School of Engineering.
Chris, the Raymond A. (1921) and Helen E. St. Laurent Professor of Chemical Engineering, is a member of the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT. He is also an Associate Member at both the Broad Institute, and the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT, and Harvard. He holds a BS in chemistry from the University of Virginia and a PhD in physical chemistry at Harvard University. He extended his research into immunology at Harvard Medical School with Hidde Ploegh from 2004-2005, and at the Immune Disease Institute from 2005-2007.
During his academic career, Chris has earned such distinctions as a W.M. Keck Distinguished Young Scholar award for Medical Research (2009), a Dana Scholar award for Human Immunology (2009), and recognition as a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar.
Critically important in his LGO role, Chris also has a long career of engagement with industry and bringing research into commercial application. He was a Distinguished Engineer in Residence at Biogen from 2015-2016. He has co-authored more than 150 manuscripts and is an inventor on multiple patents related to single-cell analysis and biomanufacturing. Professor Love is co-founder of OneCyte Biotechnologies, HoneyComb Biotechnologies, Amplifyer Bio, and Sunflower Therapeutics. He also serves as an advisor to Repligen, QuantumCyte, and Alloy Therapeutics.
This long connection with industry led to Chris being named as a faculty co-director of the MIT Initiative for New Manufacturing, formally launching in May 2025, which aims to drive a transformation of industry to achieve manufacturing that is more productive, more resilient, more sustainable, and provides high-quality jobs.
Chris has been a long-time supporter of the LGO program, having advised ten LGO theses since 2009 at industry partner Amgen and with past partners 3M, Novartis and Pfizer. Chris has taught 10.53 and 10.495 to LGO Chemical Engineering students since 2009.
I am excited about the prospect of working with Chris and am looking forward to years of cooperation with him in guiding the LGO program to new heights. Chris succeeds Duane Boning, who for eight years provided the highest level of commitment to leading and supporting our program. We are grateful Duane continues to support LGO in his Institute role as Vice Provost for International Activities.
Please help me warmly welcome Chris to our LGO community,
Thomas
