LGO Industry Co-Director Job Description

Position Overview

The Leaders for Global Operations (LGO) Program at MIT is seeking an Industry Co-Director to join its leadership team, and to help direct this world-class graduate program at MIT focused on global manufacturing and operations into its next era of academic innovation and growth. Since 1988, LGO has set the standard for industry/academic partnerships and has significantly impacted industry and academia through its educational innovations, strong industry connections, and the over 1,300 alumni who are leaders in globally prominent organizations. The Industry Co-Director will be part of the program’s leadership team—along with Faculty Co-Directors from both the MIT Sloan School of Management and the MIT School of Engineering, as well as the LGO Executive Director—and will have significant engagement with the LGO Governing Board. The Industry Co-Director will bring experience as a senior operations executive to help shape the program strategy, recruit and retain industry partners, and guide the program’s governance structure, through building collaborative relationships with stakeholders including the Governing Board, partner companies, faculty, staff, and students.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic

  • Develop strategies and long-range plans to ensure that LGO remains contemporary and meets the needs of the students, partner companies, and faculty
  • With the two faculty co-directors and the LGO program director, manage strategic planning and implementation
  • Organize teams of students and partner company members as needed to address implementation of strategic initiatives
  • Retain current industry partners through frequent, proactive engagement
  • Recruit new industry partners that align to the values and goals of LGO

Tactical

  • Chair the LGO Operating Committee meetings and facilitate the LGO Governing Board meetings
  • Maintain avenues of communication regarding the partnership with industry, alumni, and other external partnerships
  • Seek input from LGO governance bodies on key issues and initiatives
  • Mentor students
  • For interested candidates, teaching opportunities may be available

Perform other related duties as required.

Supervision Received

Receives official supervision from LGO Executive Director. The Co-Chairs of the Governing Board and the Deans of MIT Sloan and Engineering will provide input to the review of the Industry Co-Director.

Qualifications & Skills

Required: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 7 years of experience in industry, business development, or related experience. Experience as a senior executive in global operations, manufacturing, supply chain management or related fields; must have significant industry leadership experience in manufacturing and operations taken broadly and understand and have participated in the critical issues facing today’s global enterprises. Must have a vision of where this key industrial sector is heading in the future and how an academic/industry partnership can benefit industry, academia, and society. Must be able represent industry perspectives on how partner companies engage with an academic program. Advanced degree preferred as is some prior connection to higher education in a board member or other leadership and advisory role.
