Based on the strength of our relationships with our partner companies and the continuing investment they make in LGO, every student receives a fellowship provided by our partners. While the amount of the fellowship varies each year, it always covers a substantial portion of each student's tuition.
For the LGO Class of 2014, partner companies are offering generous fellowships for students admitted into the following engineering departments: Aeronautics and Astronautics, Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Mechanical Engineering. For these departments, the fellowship will range from 65 to 100 percent of two-year tuition costs. The minimum fellowship for all students will be 40 percent of tuition. In addition, some fellowships of up to 100 percent may be awarded to candidates in any engineering department who demonstrate exceptional merit.
About ten percent of each LGO class is sponsored by partner companies. We encourage applicants who are employed by LGO partners to discuss sponsorship with their human resources department or their company's LGO Operating Committee member. You may contact the LGO Office at 617.253.1055 or lgo@mit.edu for further details.
Each year, LGO offers merit scholarships to outstanding applicants. Scholarships are awarded separately from (i.e. above and beyond) the LGO fellowship. These scholarships vary from year to year, historically funded by sources including the LGO Alumni. As the LGO Admissions Committee selects each scholarship recipient, we strive to build a diverse class across dimensions including ethnicity, gender, academic discipline and academic performance. We do not solicit or accept applications for scholarships. Scholarship recipients are notified as they receive their LGO admissions decisions.
With their dual MBA and Master of Science in engineering degrees, LGOs have long assumed leadership roles in manufacturing and operations companies, both partners and non-partners. However, applicants should understand that partner companies are funding the program anticipating they will hire graduates to meet their manufacturing/operations leadership needs.
Non-sponsored students have no obligation to work for an LGO partner company following graduation. Nonetheless, our students should make a good-faith effort to consider employment by our partners, since program sustainability depends upon industry funding. Students expecting to pursue careers in banking, financial services or consulting should consider other academic programs that are more aligned with these career goals.
Students are encouraged to use the networking and career development services available through LGO to become familiar with its partner companies (and other manufacturing and operations companies) along with associated job opportunities.
