The newest class of LGO students began their two years at MIT with "The Universe Within," a week-long required course that includes a day-long Outward Bound adventure that teaches teamwork and leadership.
After journeying to Thompson Island in Boston Harbor, the students in each six-member team had to cooperate in planning and executing solutions to problems such as getting everyone over a wall or find specific trees while blindfolded. After each task, teams discussed what did or didn't go well, and how the team worked together.
Although the Class of 2014 had met in person for the first time only days earlier, the Outward Bound activities quickly got them acquainted with each other's different personalities as well as communication and leadership styles, and it drew them together as one 48-person LGO team. Even a thunderstorm in the afternoon didn't dampen the camaraderie and trust that was already taking root among the class.
