As you receive this, we will have just completed one of our busiest weeks of the year. The first-year students returned recently from the Plant Trek (note the new name) and engaged in the Internship Fest, where for the first time we held interviews in anticipation of two-way matching. The second years gave their Knowledge Review presentations, and we held the Operating Committee meeting and the Interview Fest for new applicants.
The plant trek took us to Detroit, Seattle, Phoenix, Austin, and Ponce and San Juan, Puerto Rico. We saw plants at eight partner companies and had receptions with two others. Because of an ice storm in Austin, our Dell visit became a conference call with Michael Dell and other executives and a plant visit between 9:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. But because of the leadership of the students, we were able to change flights (after a cancellation) and deal with many other contingencies. Interestingly, until we arrived in Puerto Rico, the warmest place we had been to in two weeks (by 20 degrees!) was Boston.
Top"I really should get together with the LFMs in my area." If you have ever said that to yourself, now's your chance. Subject: "Web 2.0 in the Enterprise!"
Time Magazine named "You" the person of the year in 2006, in recognition of the transformative effect that the user-driven Web 2.0 has had on the public Internet in terms of connecting people, sharing knowledge, and fostering creativity. Could the same effects be possible in industry? Can the ideals of Web 2.0 change the way organizations utilize their human resources, innovate in R&D, and manufacture products? This talk will explain how and why this is possible, including coverage of the socio-technical system-level issues which need to be addressed when translating the public Web 2.0 into the enterprise.
March 16, 2007
9am PST / 12 noon EST
Prof. David Simchi-Levi
Subject: "Supply Chain Coordination and Influenza Vaccination"
Billions of dollars are being allocated for influenza pandemic preparedness, and vaccination is a primary weapon for fighting influenza outbreaks. The influenza vaccine supply chain has characteristics that resemble the news vendor problem, but possesses several characteristics that distinguish it from typical supply chains. Differences include a nonlinear value of sales (caused by the nonlinear health benefits of vaccination due to infection dynamics) and vaccine production yield issues. We show that production risks, taken currently by the vaccine manufacturer, lead to insufficient supply of vaccine. Unfortunately, several supply contracts that coordinate buyer (governmental public health service) and supplier (vaccine manufacturer) incentives in industrial supply chains cannot fully coordinate the influenza vaccine supply chain. We design a variant of the cost sharing contract and show that it provides incentives to both parties so that the supply chain achieves global optimization and hence guarantees sufficient supply of vaccine.
