MIT LGO - Operations Management MBA and Engineering Masters

LGO Alumni Newsletter August 2006

Message from Don Rosenfield

The big upcoming event for LFM is the planned signing of a memorandum of understanding for the China LFM program.  This will take place in Shanghai on August 29th and in addition to myself, David Simchi-Levi, Jon Griffith and Jeff Shao, Dean Tom Magnanti will attend.  We now have nine companies committed, and we have had our first three visiting faculty this summer, and we will have three more this fall.

The new class is nearing the end of the summer, and the second years are in various parts of the world, including Luxembourg, Switzerland, Germany, India, China and  Singapore.

We are now preparing for the Midstream Reviews and fall Operating Committee meetings.  We are working on a new format for the reviews with both talks and posters and no more than one session at a time.

On-Line Seminars

Each month, LFM hosts speakers on a virtual seminar in order to share interesting information on the last MIT research and last industry techniques in order to keep our community connected.

August 4, 2006 9:00PDT / 12:00noon EDT

"A Lean Guy Goes to the Hospital"

Mark Graban, LFM '99, left the manufacturing world a year ago to work as a "lean healthcare" consultant with ValuMetrix Services, part of Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, a Johnson & Johnson company.  Prior to LFM, Mark worked for General Motors.  After LFM, Mark has worked for Dell Computer, Factory Logic (a lean software startup), and Honeywell. In his presentation, Mark will draw on his experiences working in hospital laboratories, pharmacies, and cancer treatment centers to share:

  • What might seem familiar to manufacturing people (waste and problems in hospitals)
  • What might seem different ("Healthcare Thinking" and the transition to "Lean Thinking")
  • What kinds of success hospitals are having with lean (and it's not about layoffs or cutting costs)
  • What you can do to promote lean healthcare in your communities (while keeping your current job)

If you have any questions in advance of the webcast, Mark can be reached by clicking his name.  You will also want to check out Mark's blog discussion on Lean theory and implementation ( www.leanblog.org.) Jamie Flinchbaugh (LFM '98) is also a regular contributor to this blog.

CALL FOR SPEAKERS
